Character memory that does not creep

An AI character can feel attentive without keeping a permanent dossier on every fan. The design choice is not simply “memory on” or “memory off”: separate world knowledge, temporary conversation context and any profile detail a person chooses to save.

Use three memory layers

Canon is approved information about the fictional world: character relationships, locations and timeline rules. It belongs to the product’s source material, not to a fan’s personal history. Session context helps the character follow the current scene and can expire when the session ends. Optional user memory might store a chosen name, accessibility preference or ongoing plot thread, but only when the product explains the purpose and gives the person a way to review, edit or remove it.

Do not turn every disclosure into a lasting memory. A fan may mention a difficult event because it matters in the current scene, not because they want it repeated later. Before storing a detail, ask whether the feature still works without it. Avoid retaining sensitive information, details about other people, or text that the user did not deliberately choose to keep. If someone shares a device or account, consider whether saved context could surprise another reader.

Make controls visible in the experience

  • Tell the user what is remembered and distinguish it from canon facts.
  • Offer “forget this,” reset and delete controls near the conversation, not only in a distant settings page.
  • Show when a saved note changes and let the user correct it.
  • Set a retention period that matches the feature, and explain what backup or moderation copies may remain.
  • Keep a fallback for missing or contradictory context instead of inventing a personal fact.

For organizations subject to EU data-protection law, GDPR Article 5 includes principles such as data minimisation and storage limitation; the official regulation text should be read with advice on the specific product and context. The NIST Privacy Framework is another voluntary way to structure a data-flow and risk discussion across jurisdictions.

Memory is part of the character experience, so test it with ordinary sessions, reset requests and shared-device scenarios before release. For canon and fan-work boundaries, read AI and fandom ethics; for a private art pipeline, read local art for unreleased IP. See services or contact to discuss a bounded prototype.
